Accessibility Statement

Last updated: April 2026

What We Are Aiming For

Our goal is conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That is the standard that most US accessibility laws and lawsuits reference, and it covers the core needs: screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, color contrast, readable text, and meaningful structure.

We are a small business. We do not have a full-time accessibility team. What we do have is a commitment to build the site right the first time and to fix problems quickly when they are reported. If something on the site is not working for you, email us or call (516) 555-0100 and we will address it. A real human will respond, usually within 24 hours on a weekday.

What We Have Already Done

As of the "last updated" date above, the site supports:

Screen readers:

  • Every page has a proper heading structure (one H1, then H2s, then H3s, no skipped levels)
  • All images have descriptive alt text or are marked decorative
  • All form fields have associated labels
  • All buttons and links have accessible names
  • ARIA landmarks are used for navigation, main content, and footer
  • We test with VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, and with NVDA on Windows

Keyboard navigation:

  • Every interactive element is reachable with Tab
  • Focus is visible at all times (thick outline, high contrast)
  • Logical tab order follows the visual order of the page
  • No keyboard traps (you can always Tab out of any element)
  • Skip-to-content link at the top of every page
  • The estimate calculator and the visualizer tool are fully keyboard-operable

Color and contrast:

  • Body text contrast ratio exceeds 7:1 (AAA, not just AA)
  • Large text contrast ratio exceeds 4.5:1
  • Color is never the only way we convey information (for example, form errors use icons and text, not just red)
  • Dark mode is supported with the same contrast standards

Text and readability:

  • Body text is 18px by default (larger than most sites)
  • Line height is 1.65 (comfortable reading)
  • Paragraphs are short
  • Plain English, not jargon
  • Text resizes up to 200% without breaking layout
  • Text reflows on narrow viewports without horizontal scrolling

Media:

  • Any video on the site has captions
  • Any audio has a text transcript
  • No auto-playing audio
  • No flashing content that could trigger seizures

Forms:

  • Clear error messages in plain English
  • Errors are announced to screen readers
  • Required fields are marked with both an asterisk and explicit text
  • The estimate calculator accepts keyboard input on every step

What We Are Still Working On

We believe in being honest about what is not perfect. Here is what we know about as of the last update:

  1. The siding visualizer is hard to use with a screen reader. The core experience of the visualizer is visual (pick a color, see a rendered image). We provide text labels for every control and a text description of the result ("rendered in Aged Pewter Hardie with white trim"), but the experience is less useful without sight than with. We are researching better alternative experiences for visually impaired users. If this is you and you want to pick a siding color, call Linda at (516) 555-0100 and we will walk through options verbally and ship physical samples.
  1. Some portfolio photos do not yet have detailed alt text. Every photo has basic alt text ("white Hardie plank install in Massapequa, after"), but some would benefit from more specific descriptions (exact color, trim style, architectural style). We are working through the backlog.
  1. The map on the service area page is embed-based and not fully accessible. The map displays the same information in a plain text list directly below the map, so the content is reachable, but the map widget itself is not ideal for screen reader users. We are evaluating replacements.
  1. Some older PDF downloads (permit samples, historical job photos) are not tagged for accessibility. Newer PDFs we generate are tagged. Older ones in the archive are not. If you need an accessible version of a specific PDF, email us and we will generate one within 48 hours.

We expect to address each of these issues in 2026. We will update this list as we fix them.

What We Have Tested

We have tested the site with:

  • Screen readers: VoiceOver (macOS and iOS), NVDA (Windows), JAWS (Windows, limited testing)
  • Browsers: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, on current versions and one version back
  • Keyboard only: Full keyboard testing on all interactive elements
  • Zoom: Tested at 200% and 400% zoom
  • High contrast: Tested in Windows High Contrast mode and macOS Increase Contrast mode
  • Mobile: Tested on iPhone, Android, and iPad
  • Older browsers: The site degrades gracefully on browsers up to 3 years old

If you use a different combination and the site does not work, please tell us.

Process

Accessibility is not a checklist we do at the end. It is built into how we make the site:

  1. Design: Every design starts with color contrast and text size decisions that meet AA minimum (we usually exceed AA).
  2. Development: We use semantic HTML (real buttons, real links, real form labels) instead of div-based fake elements. We use ARIA only when semantic HTML is not enough.
  3. Testing: Every page is tested with at least one screen reader and with keyboard navigation before it goes live.
  4. Audits: We run automated accessibility audits (axe-core) on every deploy and fix any critical or serious issues before the deploy goes out.
  5. Manual review: We manually test new features with assistive tech, not just automated tools.

Tell Us What Is Not Working

If any part of the site is not working for you, please tell us. We take accessibility reports seriously and we respond personally.

Email: [CONTACT EMAIL TBD] Phone: (516) 555-0100 Mail: Long Island Siding Co., 142 Old Country Road, Hicksville NY 11801

When you report an issue, please include:

  1. The page URL where you hit the problem
  2. What you were trying to do
  3. What assistive tech you were using (if any)
  4. What happened vs. what you expected

We respond to accessibility reports within 2 business days. If the fix is small, we usually have it deployed within 5 business days. Larger fixes may take longer and we will keep you updated.

If the Site Is Not Working for You

You do not have to use the website to work with us. You can:

  • Call (516) 555-0100 Monday through Saturday 7am to 6pm and talk to Linda, Mike, or Ryan directly
  • Stop by the shop at 142 Old Country Road, Hicksville NY 11801 (same hours)
  • Mail us the address of your house and we will mail back a printed ballpark estimate

Everything the website does can be done by phone or in person. The website is a convenience, not a requirement.

Applicable Laws

We build the site to meet or exceed:

  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title III (public accommodations)
  • New York State Human Rights Law accessibility provisions
  • Section 508 (for any government-facing materials)

We are not currently certified by any third-party accessibility auditor. If that matters for your purposes, we can provide our internal audit results or arrange an independent audit on request.

Changes

We update this statement when we fix a known issue, find a new one, or test with a new assistive technology. The "last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent material change. Small edits (fixing a typo, adding a phone number) do not update the date.
