Siding Contractor in Smithtown, NY

Smithtown is heavily wooded, which is great for shade and terrible for cedar. We spec Smithtown jobs around the realities of the neighborhood: carpenter bees, woodpeckers, sap-dropping oaks, and the 1960s tract homes that make up most of the housing stock.

What Makes Smithtown Siding Jobs Unique

Smithtown sits in the middle of Suffolk County and it is heavily wooded. Drive any residential street in Smithtown, Saint James, Commack (partial), Kings Park, or Nesconset and you will see mature oaks, maples, and pines everywhere. The canopy is beautiful. It is also full of wildlife.

Carpenter bees. Real cedar gables in Smithtown are a carpenter bee buffet. We have been called out to dozens of houses where the original cedar shake on the gables is drilled full of half-inch holes. The cedar has to come off and get replaced, and we strongly recommend Maibec engineered cedar or Maxitile fiber cement shake as the replacement, because carpenter bees avoid both.

Woodpeckers. Red-bellied woodpeckers and pileated woodpeckers are common in Smithtown wooded areas. They drum on fascia boards, cedar gables, and occasionally on vinyl (looking for bugs behind it). Hardie and fiber cement shake materials discourage them.

Sap from oaks and pines. Shade trees drop sap onto south and west walls. Light-colored siding (white, cream, pale gray) will show the staining within a year or two. We recommend mid-tone grays or greens for houses under heavy canopy.

Sheltered from salt air. Smithtown is far enough inland that salt exposure is not a major concern. Standard vinyl performs well here when installed correctly.

The Homes We See Most in Smithtown

1960s raised ranches. Classic Smithtown tract home. 2,000-2,400 sqft, raised entry, attached garage below. These work well with Hardie Plank or Monogram 46 vinyl. We have done 14 of these.

1970s hi-ranches and splits. Smithtown gained a lot of tract development in the 70s. These houses are showing their age, and most are on their second reside. Insulated vinyl is the sweet spot.

Custom colonials (1980s-present). Larger 2-story homes, usually on quarter-acre lots with mature trees. Hardie is the preferred upgrade on these.

Older village homes in Smithtown and Saint James. A small pocket of pre-war homes near the village centers. Cedar or engineered cedar (Maibec) is the right call here.

What We Watch For on Smithtown Jobs

Long driveways and mature trees. Most Smithtown homes have longer driveways than Nassau and more room for crew staging, but the trees limit where we can park. We use the curb permit from the town when the driveway is impractical.

Large lots, more elevations. Smithtown homes often have 4 full elevations visible from the street, unlike cramped Nassau lots where the side walls are mostly hidden. This means all 4 walls need to look good. We spec accordingly.

Older wall construction on pre-1970 homes. Some of the older tract homes have blown-in insulation issues or original wall wrap that has deteriorated. We find this during tear-off and document it before covering.

HOA considerations. A few Smithtown subdivisions have HOA rules about exterior colors and materials. We will check before we quote and handle any paperwork.

Reviews from Smithtown customers

Review 1: "Our real cedar gables had been eaten alive by carpenter bees for 10 years. Mike suggested Maibec and walked us through exactly why it would solve the problem. He was right. Three years later, zero bee holes, and the color has held up perfectly. The crew was courteous and we would hire them again." — Mary T., Smithtown · Maibec · 2023

Review 2: "We had three quotes and Long Island Siding Co. was the middle one. We chose them because Mike was the only person who walked the house for more than 15 minutes and actually looked at the north wall (which had water staining nobody else noticed). He was honest about what needed to be fixed and the final price matched the quote." — Kevin and Rachel J., Nesconset · Monogram 46 · 2024

Review 3: "Smooth job from start to finish. The Hardie looks incredible on our colonial. The crew was respectful of our landscaping. Mike walked the finished house with me and answered every question I had." — Steven W., Smithtown · James Hardie · 2024
